The final competitive performance for our band program was completed on Friday, May 1 st at the annual North Carolina State Jazz Ensemble Festival at Table Rock Middle School in Morganton. The jazz ensemble played for three festival judges in a setting exactly like the state festival that the Symphonic Band takes part in each March, and the band received straight Superior Ratings. This is the fourth consecutive year that our Jazz Ensemble has earned the highest honor that our state gives, and the third straight year that they have been judged superior by all three judges!! We are extremely proud of this group for this accomplishment, especially when you consider the youth of this year's band, and the number of students learning new instruments in the group! Congratulations to the jazz band students!! The jazz band has several performances left to finish up their performance schedule, including a joint county concert at Mayfest in Newton on May 16 th , and the FIRST EVER ALL-COUNTY JAZZ ENSEMBLE, which will include four members of our current jazz band. See the attached schedule of events for more details.
Several Bandys “ensembles” also performed in competition on this year's spring trip, although none of the bands were anything near full strength with the number of members who were not able to travel this spring. The Bandys Music Department traveled to Atlanta early in April, and competed in the Music in the Parks national competition circuit. All of the Bandys ensembles performed very well, and received numerous awards. The Symphonic Band finished 1 st in its class with an Excellent rating, and the Jazz Ensemble finished 1 st in its class with an Excellent Rating. In addition to these awards, both Bandys ensembles received Overall awards as Contest Champions, meaning that they were the best high school symphonic band and jazz ensemble in the competition, regardless of size or class. Aaron Harris was also recognized as best high school Jazz Soloist for his performance. Even short-handed, it was a very successful group of performances for our kids.
The Trojan Bands will complete their spring performance schedules with the annual Awards Banquet and Farewell Concerts on May 26 th and 27 th . The Awards Banquet will be held at Mill Creek again this year, with the jazz band performance and catered meal beginning at 6 p.m. and the awards ceremony following at 7:30 p.m. The semester's final performance will be at the Farewell Concert on May 27 th , beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Maiden High School auditorium. The Freshman Concert Band will begin the evening, and will be followed by the final performance of our Symphonic Band, including the last high school performance for our talented senior class. This is definitely a night that you will not want to miss, so please plan to attend and be part of it if you can. Please not that the Farewell Concert date is changed from what may have been published earlier in the semester, due to a conflict with the facility. The concert is SET FOR WEDNESDAY, MAY 27 TH . Please adjust your plans accordingly.
The Bandys guard program has shifted its focus to next year's marching Color Guard after completing another successful winter guard season. Guard auditions were recently completed, and we had TWENTY-FIVE students auditioning, more than FOUR TIMES the number of students we've had the last few years. The new Color Guard was selected and will include 18 active members and two alternates, including FOURTEEN new members from Mill Creek and Bandys! This is an exciting start to our marching band plans, and we are very pleased to add so many new and exciting students to our group!
Booster Business
The April booster meeting focused on upcoming events for our performing ensembles this spring, final details and planning for upcoming fundraisers, and officer nominations for the 2009 school year. The nominating committee presented its proposed slate of officers for next school year, which includes Brent Chafin as president, Freda Glenn as Vice President, Beth Shuford for Secretary, Shannon White for Treasurer, and Annette Newton for Assistant Treasurer. Special thanks to the Martins and the Thomases for their help on the nominating committee. The final booster meeting will be May 18 th , at our regularly scheduled time, and elections for next year's officers will take place at that time.

Spring Race Event Fast Approaching!
Our boosters have been very active with their fundraising efforts this spring, and the brunt of our spring fundraising efforts are quickly approaching. In addition to our tux raffle and magazine fundraisers, which were recently completed, we are well into our final preparations for the May race event at Lowe's Motor Speedway. We are very happy to welcome help from the Bunker Hill Band Boosters, the Bandys Chorus and the Queen City Ringers from Charlotte, NC in helping us round out our volunteer numbers. However, this help is bitter-sweet…while we appreciate the additional volunteers, using help from groups outside of our own boosters takes money out of our program, and reduces the resources that we have to fund our band's efforts for our students!
With that being said, MAY RACE SIGN-UPS ARE STILL UNDERWAY!!! We are getting down to departure time at this point, BUT THERE ARE STILL SPOTS AVAILABLE FOR MOST DAYS!! Everyone reaps the benefits of this project, so PLEASE DO YOUR PART!!! Here is the current sign-up schedule:

May 24, 2009 (10 a.m.-3a.m.) Work Restrooms 7 Women, 10 Men
Most startling is that 70 % of those currently signed up are STUDENTS, NOT ADULTS!! Help us fix this situation ASAP!! Everyone is reminded that there is a new incentive program in place for this year's spring race as well. To help offset some of the increases in camp fees, we are going to allow participation in the spring race event to help with camp fees. Any family that sends a worker to the race, student or adult, on a single day during the event, will have $20 taken off of their camp fees . In addition, any family that sends two workers (MUST include at least one adult) will have $40 taken off of their camp fees !! We are asking that the “adults” be anyone 21 years of age or older…anyone who would be considered a chaperone by Bandys High School standards, although they can be any adult, not only parents of active students. In addition, the boosters are planning a prize lottery that will be open to anyone who works who DOES NOT have an active student in next year's band (including graduating seniors and senior parents from this year's group). There will be ten $25 gift cards in a lottery-style drawing, and winners will be drawn at our awards banquet. ONLY people who do not qualify for the “camp fees” incentive listed above are eligible for this lottery, so your chances of winning are great! We would GREATLY ENCOURAGE those of you who haven't signed up to help yet to do so ASAP!
Reservations for Awards Night are currently being taken. The meal is being catered by Bennett's in Hickory, and the cost is $8 per person. Seniors and jazz ensemble students eat for free. Details should have come home with students…if you did not receive them, follow up with your child or contact Mr. Keisler in the band office. Reservations and payment are due NO LATER than May 15 th.
The band boosters are re-forming the scholarship committee that selects the Take the Field Scholarship each year, at the request of the current committee. Details on committee meetings and interview times will be forwarded to all members once the new committee is set.
