The jazz ensemble is the most advanced musical ensemble that our program offers, and meets during the spring semester. It is open to all 10-12 grade students in the band program by audition in the fall semester, and occasionally to members of the freshman concert band if scheduling allows it. Members of the jazz ensemble must be enrolled in either Concert Band II or Symphonic Band IN THE SAME SEMSTER that they are in the jazz ensemble, which usually limits the membership to older students with more elective courses in their schedule. Seating and instrumentation is determined through an audition late in the fall semester, and will be limited by the instrumentation needs of the ensemble.
The jazz ensemble will play standard jazz literature, and will perform an average of 8-12 times in the spring semester, including a performance in the North Carolina Bandmasters Association Jazz Band Festival in April. Students will be exposed to all different styles of jazz music, and will be given opportunities in both written solo work and improvisation.
